Deposits work because they give the customer a stake. Charging a small refundable deposit ($25–$100) at booking meaningfully reduces no-shows. Customers who object to a deposit were often not going to show up anyway. Customers who pay one tend to keep the appointment.

The objection "customers will leave if I ask for a deposit" is real but smaller than owners think — a small share of bookings drop off when a deposit field is added.
